ABOUT JOINT REPLACEMENT
Do you suffer from joint damage caused by injury, arthritis or another degenerative disorder? As one of Tulsa’s leading programs for total joint replacement, CORE’s program provides coordinated care—from diagnosis through treatment and rehabilitation.
We perform the most advanced hip and knee joint replacement procedures. Our multidisciplinary approach helps you recover quickly and return to your active lifestyle.
If you are suffering from severe hip pain as a result of arthritis, fractures, bone death or another condition, a hip replacement may be an excellent treatment option. In this procedure, the diseased bone and cartilage are replaced with a metal ball and plastic cup.
Our surgeons are experts in advanced techniques for hip replacement, including the direct anterior approach. Most patients who undergo hip surgery experience pain relief, restored function and an improvement to their overall quality of life.
During the direct anterior approach the hip is approached and replaced through the front of the leg and hip. This allows the most important muscles for hip function, the gluteal muscles, to be left undisturbed. An important advancement in minimally invasive surgery, the goal of the direct anterior approach is to minimize the size of your skin incision and spare unnecessary damage to the underlying muscles, tissue and nerves.
Yogesh Mittal, MD is one of the only orthopaedic surgeons in Tulsa to perform this operation.
If you have severe hip degeneration and your pain can no longer be controlled by medication, you may be a candidate for MAKOplasty® Total Hip Replacement.
MAKOplasty total joint replacement uses the RIO® robotic arm, which allows your surgeon to achieve a new level of accuracy. Before surgery, the RIO® system’s software creates a 3-D model of your hip based on a CT scan. Your surgeon will then place your implant based on your unique anatomy.
Benefits of this procedure include better outcomes and fewer complications. There is also a reduced risk of leg length discrepancy.

If you have osteoarthritis or a knee injury that has not responded well to more conservative treatment, such as anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone injections, a knee replacement may be an appropriate treatment option. Knee replacement devices are designed to relieve pain caused by cartilage damage and usually last up to 20 years in most patients.
During the knee replacement procedure, the entire joint is replaced with an artificial prosthesis. The end of the femur is replaced with a metal shell, while the end of the tibia is fitted with a plastic cup and metal stem that fit into the shell. The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and kneecap may be replaced, if needed, or may be left in place.
Our knee replacement surgeons use computer-assisted navigation and robotics, which allow for precise cuts and placement of the prosthesis, resulting in better outcomes for our patients.
MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing is a minimally invasive procedure suitable for patients suffering with painful early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. It is performed using the surgeon-controlled RIO® robotic arm system and offers more accurate resurfacing of the diseased portion of the knee, saving as much of the original knee as possible.
As a partial knee surgery, MAKOplasty can be performed on either the medial (inside) compartment, patellofemoral (top) compartment or the lateral (outside) portion of the knee.
In many cases, patients are permitted to walk soon after surgery, drive a car within two weeks and return to normal daily activities shortly thereafter. The use of this highly advanced robotic arm technology can:
- Enable surgeons to accurately resurface the arthritic portion of the knee and preserve healthy tissue and bone.
- Facilitate optimal implant positioning to result in a more natural-feeling knee following surgery.
- Result in a more rapid recovery and shorter hospital stay when compared to traditional total knee replacement surgery.
- Promote a rapid relief from pain and return to daily activities.
