THE LATEST IN KNEE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES

If you suffer from knee pain, as a result of osteoarthritis or degenerative knee conditions, our surgeons can help. We are experts in the latest surgical option, the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System Partial Knee Resurfacing procedure, which provides pain relief and improved mobility without a total knee replacement.

Unlike total knee replacement (which replaces the entire knee joint), the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery procedure targets only the damaged portion of a patient’s knee — leaving the healthy, unaffected portions intact. The benefits of this procedure include:

  • Better surgical outcomes
  • Less implant wear and loosening
  • Smaller incision
  • Less scarring
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Shorter hospitalization
  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced failure rate

Using state-of-the-art imaging and robotic technology, Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery allows an implant to be positioned and secured in the joint. As a result, your knee can move smoothly again.

HOW DOES THE MAKO ROBOTIC-ARM ASSISTED SURGERY SYSTEM WORK?

During your initial consultation, your surgeon will assess your knee and order CT scans of your knee. These CT scans are used to create 3-D digital images of the knee. These images allow your surgeon to design a knee implant that is modeled exclusively for your anatomy.
During the actual partial knee resurfacing procedure, your surgeon uses a minimally invasive approach to remove the diseased portions of your knee. Once the damaged cartilage, bone spurs, and loose matter have been removed, the surgeon uses the tool’s robotic arm to align, position, and secure the patient-specific implant on your joint. Many patients are walking just hours after the procedure.

IS MAKO ROBOTIC-ARM ASSISTED SURGERY RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you have early- to mid-stage osteoarthritis in just one or two of the knee’s three compartments you may be eligible for Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery partial knee resurfacing. This is a great alternative to having a total knee replacement (TKR).

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM MAKO ROBOTIC-ARM ASSISTED SURGERY?

While you may be able to walk the same day, returning to a normal lifestyle takes one to four weeks, depending on the patient. Your surgeon may refer you to an outpatient physical therapist following the procedure to help get you going again.
